Traditional or modern kung fu? which one is better for fighting a street fight? - mkfmartialarts Well, I have studied both and it depends on your instructor and your abilities. I would suggested the following :

Modern Kung Fu- Is a personal choice for the street and if you want to stay with in the Chinese tradition and be effective in self defense on the street

First one needs to find a school with a San Shou as a base, and Wing Chun for close quarters and Shuai Chiao Chin Na for throws and locks (Chin-na refers to the joint locking techniques found in various styles of Kung Fu. -see below for resources

But a TRUE Warrior needs to be able to de-escalate fights without causing too much damage - Injury is only the last result

My Instructor David Lee (Modern Kung Fu) taught us to be effective in all ranges of combat

The Main goal in MKF as in most styles of martial arts is to become a better human being. MKF is for defense of different zones, 1-5 the

The Modern Kung-Fu community utilizes the following breakdown grappling range, trapping range, punching range, and kicking range. Names are merely labels, though. In punching range, you can punch if you would like, or you might do anything else (such as an eye-strike) that would work efficiently within that range. The number of categories that is used is also optional.

In MKF, is known for its ability to adapt to different attacks and defense. The goal of a student is that he/she can defend themselves from any position.

Range Five:(projectile)- Students (adv) Instinct Combat Shooting: Defensive Handgunning and rifle skills

Range Four-Stick fighting, knife fighting ect skills (defense and ofense)

Range Three -Muay Thai kicking system and San Shou, (modified for street)and the Feet (Kicking, Knees (groin, legs, bodyect),

Range Two-Muay Thai Hands/Forearms (punching, Wing Chun (Mod) (Shuai Chiao Chin Na sub wrestling) - Locking Techniques trapping, grappling, submission chokes, armbars, leglocks), Fingers (Eye and Groin Gouges), , Elbows (head, body, legs) and Head shoulder butts .

Range One Ground Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Chin Na, Submission Wrestling) - Locking Techniques trapping, grappling, submission chokes, armbars, leglocks), Fingers (Eye and Groin Gouges), , Elbows (head, body, legs) and Head shoulder butts

The Weapons of the Modern Kung Fu :include the Knife, Stick and Baton, Machete long blade.(Mod Arnis de Mano,Corto Cadena Eskrima) focus on principles and body mechanics used in MKF to the attributes of above weapons but also cover and telescoping batons. We were taught tactics and targeting designed to stop an attacker by destroying his ability to wield a weapon effectively and/or destroying his ability to move.

Finding a school and Instructor
-Visit the school and, take a few lessons.sometimes they will offer one for free

-Observe the students and ask the following questions:
a)Are these the types of people I would like to be associated with? Remember that the Kung Fu school is represented by its students.

-Are these students actually learning?(see below where I talk about street defense)

-When observing open classes, watch how the instructors interact with their students. Note the students' attitudes and general atmosphere of the school. Would you be comfortable learning in that atmosphere? Would your child?

Now start to check out their facilities. Are they clean and well-kept? Pride in one's Kung Fu school will show up in the appearance of the school itself.

-Last, and of course not least, check out the Si Fu (or instructor).
-What are his credentials?
-Do you feel any sort of bonding with this person?

-Is this someone that generates immediate respect? Now look at his ability. You already know whether or not he can teach you, from observing his students. But is this man a professional and for myslef I look for people with law enforcement background/ military ?

- Do not limit yourself to a style, but what works!

Note-
I would rather train with someone that has ten years with street or combat experience and is an instructor vs a kick boxing champion with no street experience
