I remember Training With Devin Willis And Damon Willis - mkfmartialartsI started off my Martial Arts career at 5 years of age. I grew up watching Kung Fu theater and my pop's signed me up for Kung Fu . After that time, I went on to the ever so popular Tae Kwon Do and then High School wrestling. After an LDS Mission to Teas , I decided to join the the United States Army where, assigned to the 4th Psychological Operations Group , I served 17 months in Kuwait and on the borders of Iraq in full combat during Operation Desert Storm.
After My discharg from the Army, I went on a deep quest to find the best of all martial arts systems. This led me to various combative styles such as Boxing, Sambo, Shootfighting, American Combatives, Krav Maga, in which he started to get more of a perspective on combatives and how it can be used by everyone, including military and law enforcement personnel.

Traveling further into the martial arts and self defense community I found the closet with Devin Willis and Modern Kung fu( Now appers to be Willis Modern Combatives)

MKF-is a system that , MKF is for defense of different zones, 1-5 the Modern Kung-Fu community utilizes the following breakdown grappling range, trapping range, punching range, and kicking range. Names are merely labels, though. In punching range, you can punch if you would like, or you might do anything else (such as an eye-strike) that would work efficiently within that range. The number of categories that is used is also optional. In MKF, is known for its ability to adapt to different attacks and defense. The goal of a student is that he/she can defend themselves from any position. This system does not believe in any set techniques, instead it holds to studying movement of the human body

I was allowed to come at Devin at any angle unarmed and then Damon gave me a blade(sharp and dared me to go after Devin Willis, before I knew it on all occations I was down trying to figure out what had happened it humbled me, even today. It must be noted we also covered sensitivity training, ground combat, street defenses, sparring, and weapons training so effective, it humbled me, that Devin and Damon were so humble as well.

I am now an instructor in Devin Willis's MKF. I am privileged and honored to be have been a student of Don Neal, a longtime private student of Mr. Willis's. Mr. Neal Started in Boxing, Hapkido and Kenpo in the early 80's, he has trained consistently in Martial arts but mainly MKF for over 27 years. He severd in the Military working closely with protection details, this experience has led to specializing in grafting MKF self-defense ways with contact manipulation, contact immobilization, contact control, and releases. This is also reflected in his use of the weapon use for similar applications.

Guardian Self-Defense program-(Modern Combat )

guardian keychain
The Guardian Self-Defense program began over ten yours ago when Devin and a few associates began looking for a simple but effective method to help the general public from becoming victims of the increasingly dangerous society in which we live. He taught rape prevention classes and youth awareness and defense courses in California, but wanted to extend his reach and influence to a nationwide audience. He looked at the many products and education courses available on the market but felt that most were either ineffective or too complicated and impractical for use by the average person looking for a simple but real way to protect themselves.

The Guardian keychain was born with a simple but extremely effective way to focus energy with a variety of striking methods and areas. Devin joined with family members and combined his expertise with the experience of others to develop the comprehensive self-defense education program now offered by PWP, LLC.

I know Franklin has worked with a couple other camps occasionally like Miletich, and Franklin is known to travel to Utah to train with Horn and his camp.

Student shares his story about "Devin Willis"

Jeff Says:
February 18, 2009 at 6:54 am e I studied for a little while with Devin in San Jose, at his house (right near Santa Theresa Ave.) where he would essentially show us a new technique or two, drill it a few times, then have us spar… if we didn’t use the new technique, he’d have us spar (10oz blue and red boxing gloves and shin pads) using only that technique. I also remember that he was academically challenged (really bad at school) but he viscerally demonstrated that there is little relation between school and education. If he saw a new technique in a magazine or book he’d want to try it out right away so he could capture it in muscle memory.
As for aikijujutsu training, I’ve had some aikido training, that is NOT the way Devin threw you (at least not back in 82/83). It was a lot less gracefull looking, Devin would push/swing/pull you into the garage door or a car or the ground or grab your hair or step on your foot (when you’d try and “block” something).
At that point in time he said that if you couldn’t do a joint lock technique with boxing gloves on, it was pointless (just like forms, which he disliked at that time). He was only 17 or so at the time so he may well have changed his mind since then.
I remember him coming back from his trip to Texas with his new “toy” wing chun. And I might be putting it too lightly, but that’s how he treated new techniques and martial theories, like toys to be played with. We (his half dozen or so semi-regular students) jumped right to chi-sao.
After he left I studied Kuk Sool for a few years, training there was fun, and I didn’t get kicked in the nuts or get bloody nose nearly as often as I did training with Devin, but I doubt what I learned was nearly as effective, and it certainly wasn’t for the time invested.
